Greetings AP English Language and Composition Students!

Welcome to AP English Language and Composition! I look forward to getting to know each of you at the start of the school year! First, let’s get some housekeeping things out of the way by making sure that you’ve signed up for the correct course. The Advanced Placement English Language and Composition course is a college-level, introductory writing course that satisfies your English III requirement and may result in the awarding of college credit with the successful passing of the AP exam in May. Students in this course will read and carefully analyze a broad and challenging range of nonfiction prose selections with an emphasis on making sure students understand how the intentional construct of language plays a critical role in all forms of communication. We do this by reading and analyzing historic and contemporary works of nonfiction and fiction to increase students’ awareness of their own writing styles and techniques. Students then use this information to compose effective narrative, expository, analytical, and argumentative essays. Students will benefit from advanced writing instruction emphasizes writing as a process consisting of multiple phases, including planning, drafting, and revising (and repeat). Students will be given feedback on their work from both the instructor and their peers. Students will also be taught and expected to employ advanced vocabulary and varied sentence structure, to organize ideas logically, to balance generalizations and specifics, to effectively utilize rhetorical strategies, and to cite sources in accepted formats. Please note both AP Lang and AP Lit are writing-intensive courses. If you are in the “write” place (lol), please keep reading to learn more about your summer assignment!

If any questions arise while completing the summer assignments, please reach out to me via email at [email protected]. Please be patient. I am a summer camp director, so while I try to be prompt, it may take a few hours before you receive a reply.

Happy reading/writing!

Mr. Ian Taylor
